Global challenges, shared solutions

Invitation from the Patron, Society of Construction Law

The conference theme “Global challenges, shared solutions” underlines the inescapable fact that the cutting edge technology of the 21st century has spawned a dynamic global village. The concept was first popularized by Marshall McLuhan. He artfully described how the globe had contracted into a village by “electric technology” and the instantaneous movement of information “from every quarter to every point at the same time.”

If that was McLuhan’s perception in the 1960′s, how profoundly accurate is it today.

So it is that in second decade of the present century, issues in construction law, as never before, have come to transcend national boundaries. As the conference theme so clearly recognises, the issues clamour for trans-national solutions and the mutual sharing of hard won experience.

Thanks must be extended to our organisers for conceiving of the program and bringing us together for what promises to be an outstanding international conference of the Society of Construction Law.

The very best thing about our field of endeavour is the people who participate in it. The conference will present a wonderful opportunity to meet professionals in construction law drawn from the many parts of the ‘village’. Talk, challenge, learn and above all enjoy the good company in our great home-town of Melbourne. The city and its vineyard environs have a great deal to offer. We are looking forward to touring it with you and eating our way in great style through the few days allowed to us next May.
Hoping to see you then.

Best regards,

Hon. Justice Peter Vickery
Patron, Society of Construction Law of Australia

Invitation from the Chair of the Organising Committee

On behalf of the Society of Construction Law Australia, the Society of Construction Law New Zealand and the Organising Committee, I would like to invite you to come to the Fourth International Construction Law Conference, to be held in Melbourne in May 2012.

The Organising Committee is aiming to build on the successes of previous international conferences hosted by Societies of Construction Law: Singapore in 2006, London in 2008 and Hong Kong in 2010.

The conference theme, “Global challenges, shared solutions” is intended to encapsulate the idea that, despite the differences between jurisdictions, and between the common law and civil law, the underlying principles of construction law are essentially the same around the world. Thus, the lessons learned from different approaches in other countries are of real interest and have application in other jurisdictions and systems.

Details of the planned conference sessions and speakers can be found elsewhere on this website. You will note that our speakers are all eminent practitioners who have been invited because of their reputation and their ability to cover the breadth of issues in the program. The conference presents an ideal opportunity to learn of current trends and issues, and network with some of the world’s leading practitioners in construction law.

Conference attendees will have a unique opportunity of attending two other functions of interest to construction law professionals: the preceding 12th International Dispute Resolution Board Foundation conference in Sydney, and the American College of Construction Lawyers/Canadian College of Construction Lawyers seminar in Melbourne.

In addition to the professional value of attending the Fourth International Construction Law conference, visitors to Melbourne will have the opportunity of enjoying the ambience and facilities of one of the world’s most livable cities, including the arts, sports, shopping and a wide array of restaurants and bars.

The conference will be held at the Sofitel hotel at the top end of Collins Street, overlooking Melbourne’s parks and sporting precinct. The welcome cocktail party will be held at a unique Melbourne venue, and the conference dinner at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. A post conference tour to a winery and restaurant on the nearby Mornington Peninsula is also planned.

We look forward to welcoming you to Melbourne in May 2012 for a world-class conference on construction law.
